Ghana Red Cross Society To Train 500 People On Cholera Preparedness And Response

The Greater Accra Ghana Red Cross Society in collaboration with EU has developed a project to battle cholera in Greater Accra. With reference to last year’s cholera out-break in Accra, the society is to train five hundred (500) volunteers on the need to foil the disease in their various communities.

The five hundred volunteers will be trained on cholera prevention and social mobilization.

According to the Regional Manager Mr. Eric Asamoah Darko, the Society has trained one hundred and twenty (120) volunteers out of 500 on cholera prevention and social mobilization and these volunteers will be stationed at La Hospital, Lekma Hospital, Mamprobi Hospital, Mamobi Hospital, Adabraka Hospital, Kaneshie Hospital and Ga South respectively.

They will be attached to the OPD of the various hospital mentioned and if there is any affected person, the society volunteers will privately visit the resident of the affected personal to avoid the spread of the disease.

The first badge of the volunteers thus the one hundred and twenty (120) recruiters are from the same communities and they will be divided into two groups; the shield and the sword team. The shield team moves to a community and educate the people to prevent the disease whilst the sword team moves to fight as soon as they are hinted on a problem – He added.

The project is a year and if we do very well, Accra will mot experience cholera out-break as we experienced.

Moreover, Ghana health service can buy the idea or if Ghana Red Cross society receive funding, we shall sustained it. The district officers, regional, national and the heads of the OPD’s will monitor the activities of the volunteers. Basically, Ghana Red Cross Society will take care of the basic needs of our volunteers– He stressed.

Miss Catherine Adasu, the project manager in an interview with Uniiq Fm’s Nana Tripple said ‘’we ought to help Ghana eradicate or reduce cholera and the rate of re-occurrences’’.

According to her, cleanliness and hygiene promotion especially the environment which we leave. So we will spend time with community, household to teach them proper hand washing, adequate cleaning and treatment of water thus we will give out chlorine for the water treatment when that problem is identify.

Furthermore, we seek to treat a problem at a particular society since all the society might have different problem. The community will be involved so that if Red Cross is not available, they can treat and educate themselves unambiguously on handling the infected person.

Also, we will try on lecturing through radio jingles, animations and videos to serve as a caution to our various societies.

Mr. Abel Augustinio of the cholera preparedness and response project, Accra was not left out has he shared the same sentiment with regional and project manager and concluded by pleading with the media to help achieve these valuable course.
