Ghana Institution of Surveyors Unveils Anniversary Legacy Project

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors as part of their 50th anniversary celebration unveils legacy project called Prime Meridian [0 longitude] monument in Yilo Krobo municipality Somanya.

The Ghana Institution of Surveyors [GHIS] was established on 28th February 1969. It is the leading source of professional advice on Landed Property and Construction in Ghana. It was established out of the Ghana Branch of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors following a resolution during the annual general meeting in 1969.

According to the President of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors, Madam Ama Edumadzie Acquah, the institution comprises of three distinct professional disciplines such as the Land Surveying division [LS] which provides mapping and establishment of accurate position of features of the earth. Valuation and Estate Surveying, which is concerned with fountain management, land administration and asset valuation while Quantity Surveying deals with construction, costing, contract and procurement managers, value for money analyst and giving out experts for infrastructural development. Therefore the work we are about to unveil falls under the jurisdiction Land Surveying division.

In addition, she said, this monument in Somanya will attract and boost tourism both locally and foreign in the municipality and also aid in teaching and learning.

Meanwhile the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo, Hon Ebenezer Tetteh Kupalor in his speech thanked the Ghana Institution of Surveyors [Land Surveying Division in Somanya] for a wonderful work done for locating the prime meridian [0 degrees longitude] here in Somanya and also unveiling this monument. This has gone into history of Ghana that the Greenwich meridian has also been located here and hope this will attract tourism and teaching aid in the municipality. He added.
