Gay trial: Our children can now be safe – Dr Gabass’ neighbours

Neighbours of the convicted gay doctor Ali Gabass have welcomed the 25-year jail term that has been slapped on him, saying their children can now be safe.

An Accra magistrate court Monday sentenced the Takoradi-based medical practitioner to 25 years imprisonment after months of trial.

Dr. Gabass had been in custody over a two-count charge of defiling a child under 16 years and unnatural carnal knowledge, an offence he has denied.

He is alleged to have in the months of October 2013 and April 2014 at Kasoa and Alajo respectively, had unnatural carnal knowledge of the victim aged 16.

According to the police, during the month of October 2013, Dr. Gabass arranged and met the victim at Kasoa New Market area where he forcibly had anal sex with the victim in his car in front of the Kasoa HFC Bank.

The trial judge Rita Agyemang Budu in her ruling pronounced him guilty on defilement. He was, however, acquitted and discharged of the second count of having unnatural carnal knowledge of the victim.

Speaking to Starr News after the ruling, some neighbours of the convict said they are now at peace within themselves.

“The 25 years given him is okay. It has made the kids around our area safe. He was terrorizing our kids but now they are safe,” a parent in the community told Starr News’ Emmanuel Ohene Gyan.

Meanwhile, lawyer for the victim Francis Sosu has hailed the ruling, describing it as a victory for the rule of law.
