Galamsey Activates affecting water bodies is leading to low catch- Fishermen

The Chairman of Sekondi Canoe Owners Association in the Western Region, Mr. John Kwabena Asankona has indicated that the ongoing illegal mining in the country is really affecting water bodies especially the Ocean.

Mr. Asankona has noted that galamsey operations are affecting the habitat of the fishes due to some chemicals and lubricants that get into the water bodies.

He explained that aside the use of dynamite, carbide and other substance by some fishermen illegally for fishing, galamsey activities is also another contributing factors that affects the fisheries.

In an interview with Rite FM News, Mr. Asankona noted that, they have experience extremely low catch recently due to these illegal activities.

He however do not agree to the fact that fishes are not enough in the sea but noted they (fishermen) will continue to experience low catch if these illegal activities continue to destroy  the water bodies.
