Favourable Rains Still A Mirage For Farmers

By Catherine Ahiador:

Due to the fact that farmers actually demand rainfall in order to ensure the survival and good yield of their crops, they are always content whenever these expectations are met. Some farmers, particularly maize farmers are therefore uncomfortable with the current rainfall in the country which they say is putting more fear in them. This according to them is due to the fact that they have begun experiencing low and poor growth of their maize crops.

Speaking to the issue on Rite FM’s Kuapa Yo, Mr. Asiedu Nelson, former Extensions Officer of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and CEO of Annex ‘A’ Enterprise explained that this year’s poor rainfall has deceived maize farmers.

The heavy downpour of the rains in April deceived maize farmers to assume that the year’s rainfall pattern would favour them to yield more harvest but this is proving otherwise. This trend if it continues is likely to lead to a shortage of maize on the market as well as the shortage of other foodstuff.

Mr. Assiedu added that more than 50 percent of farmers planted their crops within a short period of time as the rains ended. He added that the provision of if there should be enough irrigation in Ghana, agriculture would be very lucrative.
