Fall In Agric Sector – Blame Government

Member of Parliament for Kwadaso constituency in the Ashanti region and who doubles as the Ranking Member on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs, Dr.Owusu Afriyie Akoto said government should be solely held responsible for the abysmal performance in the agriculture sector.

Speaking to Dr. Afriyie Akoto, he noted that the agriculture sector did not make any significant progress except a growth rate of 0.04% while adding that the crop sector rather dropped by -1.78%. According to Dr. Akoto, this showed how badly the government was handling the agriculture sector.

On the issue of the climate change which badly affected crop production in the past year, he said that we should not blame the phenomenon but rather the government for failing to meet the needs of the farmers.

Dr. Akoto further noted that for the past seven years now the agricultural sector has not seen any development. He compared the growth rate of the sector in 2008 which was 7.5% to that of 2009 which stood at 7.3% and then worse in worse is 2015 which is recorded just a 0.04% growth. Dr. Akoto therefore called on the government to do its best to improve the agricultural production in the country.
