Excessive Sunshine In April To Blame For Cassava Shortage – Cassava Excellence Center

By Catherine Ahiador:

The massive shortage of cassava in the country has become an issue of public discussion due to the numerous food and other products derived from the crop. Products such as fufu, cassava dough, gari, beer and starch among others are but a few of the many products processed from cassava.

Mr. William Agyei Manu is the Executive Director of the Cassava Excellent Center. He has explained that April’s severe sunshine is the cause of the current cassava shortage all over the country. According to Mr. Manu, it’s very difficult to uproot cassava from the soil in the absence of the rains. This according to him is due to the hardness of the soil in the absence of the rains.

Here, the quality of the cassava produced is also affected as it becomes hard as a result of the continuous sunshine, Mr. Manu added.

Mr. William Agyei Manu who was speaking on Rite FM’s Akuafo Sesen on Thursday, explained that the cassava shortage in the country only became known to him through a research work by Esoko Ghana Ltd.
