Head of political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has described the public forum organized by the Electoral Commission (EC) on the voters register as “senseless”.
According to him, the EC had to independently investigate the legitimacy of the claim of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and not create a platform for people to air their views on allegation they have not authenticated.
“NPP has provided some sort of evidence to back their claim, it’s up to the EC to privately investigate to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the case. The forum they held doesn’t make sense to me,” he stated.
The opposition NPP officially wrote two letters to the EC dated 18th August 2015 and 22 September 2015 cataloguing a number of irregularities in the voters register.
The evidence presented to EC included multiple registrations, massive cross border registrations and presence of scanned photographs in the register, unexplained bloating and discrepancies in the EC’s own numbers on the Presidential register.
In the face of all these evidence, the NPP has been calling for a new and credible voters register to ensure a free and fair 2016 general elections.
The Electoral Commission, however after organized a public forum on the voters’ register at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on the 29 and 30th October.
The forum which was organized to seek public opinion on the need for a new electoral roll before the 2016 general elections was chaired by a five member panel.
Most representatives of political parties who expressed their views at the forum were of the opinion that there is no need for the compilation of a new register.
But speaking on Accra based Oman FM, Dr. Amoako Baah insisted that, the forum cannot determine the merit and demerit in the case the NPP presented to the EC. “As I have said before, such an important exercise has been reduced to a mere talk shop” he noted.
