Dep Minister Gives Hope To Farmers

Farmers across the country are still licking their wounds after last year’s rains which left most of them reaping very poor harvests. As a result, they have been left disappointed because the rains did not come as expected.

Speaking Hon. Alhassan Yakubu who is the Deputy Minister of agriculture in charge of crops, he made it clear that everybody who witnessed the 2015 farming season will attest to the fact that it was not the best which was a dwindling the growth of the growth of the agric sector. He said by the end of March which would be the first quarter, the total performance will be made known to the general public.

He said though food production across the country was bad it was not nationwide because some regions in Ghana did not go through that. He attributed all these challenges to insufficient rainfall and the climate change.

He particularly sympathized with maize and rice farmers who seemed to have suffered the most. The deputy minister added that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture will extend technology that can supply them with water throughout the farming season and the only assuring way to achieve this is to construct irrigation dams to support farming.

Mr. Yakubu added that the ministry has awarded contract for the redesigning of Tono and Via irrigational projects and the Kpong irrigational project. WIENCO Ghana Ltd is also undertaking the construction of a dam in Yaraba, the Kpalugu irrigation project as well as a Brazilian investor who is also coming into support the farmers with irrigation.
