The Ghana National Association of Poultry farmers has organized a program under the theme, ‘Enhancing Egg Consumption In The Country’ to educate the Ghanaian populace on the need to consume at least an egg every day as a way to stay healthy and also increase our life expectancy.
Speaking on the Akuafo Se sen segment of the Rite Morning Ride on Thursday with Owuraku Asamoah, the President of the Association, Mr. Victor Oppong revealed that, the consumption of eggs in our country in very low as compared to other countries like Mexico, who knows the importance of eggs in their diet.
He also stated that investigations gathered by researchers have revealed that Ghanaians on the average consume about 12 eggs in a whole year, something which is very unfortunate. this he noted was very disastrous to the immune system. This he also added is unfortunate compared to more advanced countries like Mexico where the average consumption is about 345 eggs in a year.
According to Mr. Victor Oppong , Ghanaians fail to consume eggs with the notion that eggs contain high cholesterol, contrary to research which reveals that the type of cholesterol found in eggs is very nutritious for the human body which must prompt Ghanaians to cunsume at least one egg per day.
Mr. Oppong stressed that eggs contain most of the food nutrients which can be found in other foods, such as minerals, vitamins, proteins, etc, adding that the low rate of consumption of eggs in Ghana is very bad.
on the challenges confronting poultry farmers, Mr. Oppong cited the high cost of input in the country resulting in a low market rate for eggs.
