Blame Current Food Crisis On Bushfires

By Catherine Ahiador:

Mr. Samuel T. Annor, a multiple farmer who cultivates maize and cassava has blamed the currently food crisis in the country on the numerous bushfires which have rocked the farming sector. A worried Mr. Annor who was a guest on Rite FM’s Akuafo Se Sen on Monday opined that the issue of bush fires was fast becoming a regular occurrence in the country and leaving in its trail the massive destruction of our farms.

This he noted has resulted in the very high cost of foodstuffs such as cassava, plantain, maize, etc in the country. The worst, Mr. Annor noted was the fact that the destructions left no roots for replanting. ‘The effect of this is that if care is not taken there will be insufficiency in our food supply chain leading to severe hunger.’

The mixed crop farmer also noted that farming was now very expensive and called on potential farmers to be well equipped financially. This according to him is because farming involves the use of chemicals and these chemicals and fertilizers -are very expensive.

He added that farmers always depended on the rainfall pattern which is not favorable or reliable. Despite this, they still don’t have the finances to go in for the irrigation method.

He was also concerned that the rising numbers of farmers means fewer lands available which do not enhance farmers to practice shifting cultivation.
