By Krobea Asante Tofepa – Ntomentwene

This year’s National Farmers Day celebration will be held in the Upper East region of the country and all regions, districts and municipalities to commend hardworking farmers throughout the country on the 4th day of December 2015.

The celebration has seen a tremendous contribution from various institutions, as some have donated monies, farm inputs, and drinkables to show their support towards the celebration on Friday. The minister in charge of Agriculture, Fiifi Kweitey has stated in an interview with the media that grounds were clear to host a remarkable Farmers day celebration.

However, canoe owners in the Afram plains of the Eastern region have retracted to participate in the celebration describing it as a useless event carved to benefit a group of selected individuals. According to them, the day does not recognize fishermen who produce on small scale but benefits only farmers who produce on large scale.

Speaking to rite news in an interview, chairman of the Afram Plains Canoe Owners Association, Torgbui Abufianu reiterated that for the past one month, members of the Association have been facing the challenge of  obtaining pre-mix fuel to power their out board motors, causing them to lose a lot of money.

Mr. Abufianu also mentioned that, they have petitioned the Assembly to support their operations with inputs like tricycles, fishing nets amongst others to boost their work, however their humble appeal have not been considered. “It will be a waste of time to leave the Afram River for our business, and attend a useless event” He added.
