Bankye Hemaa Is Here

By Austin Ofori:

The Ministry Of Food and Agriculture has introduced another new variety of cassava into the system to replace the old variety that produced low yield. The new variety known as Bankye Hemaa, is currently being cultivated at Poponya in the Yilo krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region to boost cassava production in the country.

Speaking to Mr Isaac K. Tekyi who has been appointed by the West Africa Agriculture Programme, WAAP to produce this Bankye Hemaa, he said told Rite news that they want the cassava in higher quantities to boost the spread of this variety into the system.

Mr. Takyi noted that this variety had a very good yield and produced three times the yield of the old variety and can be used for all purpose that can be derived from cassava.

He was however particularly worried about the climate change this year which has affected their yield, resulting in poor produce. He prayed for enough rains in the coming year to boost the cassava production in the country.

He said the authorities had promised to contract an irrigation dam at Poponya for farmers which will help solve this problem of poor rains. He was however uncertain about when construction works for the project will begin.
