Authorities Must Sit Up To Help Cocoa Sector

Cocoa farmers at Obuasi in the Ashanti region of the country have commended a new advocacy urging government and various relevant authorities in the country to sit up in the delivery of their responsibilities.

Robert Nimo, a cocoa farmer at Obuasi in an interview on the Rite Morning Ride said, cocoa farming is one of the major sources of revenue to the  government and the country as a whole, but authorities have failed to pay the necessary  and due attention it needs.

He added that this season is the worst cocoa season in the history of the country due largely to the fact that their expectations have failed against hopes that the cocoa season would see a major boom this season.

He said all these could be attributed to the poor weather conditions, delays in the distribution of chemicals such as fertilizer, pesticides, insecticides and inadequate funds among others to acquire the necessary materials needed in order to enhance the farming practices. He added that their expectations have failed since some of them depended on their cocoa farming activities to sponsor their children’s education.

Mr. Nimo reiterated that cocoa business is the backbone of the country since it generates enough foreign exchange to the government but he believes government should forget about any cocoa revenue this season since failure has been their portion.

He later urged the government, extension officers and other relevant authorities to sit up and deliver the expected responsibilities required of them.
