Akufo – Addo Commissions University of Environment & Sustainable Development

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commissioned the first phase of University of Environment and Sustainable Development ( UESD) at Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

The first phase which cost the nation €45, 575, 000.00 has a Lecture Halls and Multi-purpose Auditorium for School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, Laboratory building for School of Agriculture and Agro entrepreneurship Development, Faculty offices for School of Agriculture and Agro Entrepreneurship Development, Vice Chancellor’s Residency, Pro Vice Chancellor’s Residency , accommodation for key officers.

The President also cut sod to commence the construction of the second phase of the university. The second phase of the project shall consist of Lectures halls, Main library, laboratories, football pitches, basketball and handball court, Tartan track, Badminton court; it will cost € 49, 871, 098.00.0

 The President who has directed the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET Fund) to pay compensation to the original owners of the university land, has also noted that the Ministry of Finance has given clearance for the University to recruit 300 staff in order to begin admission in 2020/20221 academic year.

 On his part, the Minster for Education Hon.  Mathew Opoku Prempeh commended president Akufo-Addo’s government as better than Kwame Nkrumah’s regime.

His comment came at the back of opposition National Democratic Congress’ criticism over the feasibility of the then candidate Akufo-Addo’s free senior High School campaign promise.

Speaking to Rite 90.1 FM after the ceremony, the Vice Chancellor Mr. Eric Nyarko Sampson noted that, the institution is beginning with two school namely; school of Environment and Natural Science and School of Sustainable Development.

Rolling out 13 programmes from the two schools, 600 students are expected to be admitted for the 2020/2021 pioneering students.

The chiefs and people of the Krobo enclave welcomed the commissioning with joy and gratitude.

While the chiefs from Manya and Yilo Krobo presented a parcel including precious beads, the youth in the area displayed placards bearing descriptions, Nana thank you 4 free SHS, thank you Nana for Planting for Food and Jobs, Mr. President, thank you for Nabco.”

Others were, 4 more for Nana, Nana Krobos will 4ever be grateful and Nana thank you for not neglecting Krobos.

Accompanying the president were his ministers of education, Hon. Mathew Opoku Prempeh and the deputy in charge of tertiary Professor Kwesi Yanka, Senior Minister Yaw Osarfo Marfo, Hon. Kwesi Amoako Atta, who is the Minister for Road and Highways.

Others include the Eastern Regional Minister and his Deputy Honorable Eric Kwakye Darfuor and Samuel Nuertey Ayertey respectively, Professor Ayertey – chairman of the Interim University Council and the vice chancellor, Mr. Eric Nyarko Sampson.

The chiefs, queen mothers, Municipal Chief Executives for the area and the public were present to grace the function.
