Agriculture Is The Back Bone Of The Economy Not Seen In The Budget

The 2012 Presidential Candidate for the Conventions Peoples Party (CPP), Dr Abu Sakara Foster said, Agriculture is the backbone of Ghana’s economy, leaders talk about is not reflecting in the budget.

According to him, we keep on saying our economy should be backed by Agriculture but our leaders are not making provision for that in the budget.

Speaking to the gathering at the 36th Green Week celebration of Agriculture Students, School of Agriculture at the University of Ghana –Legon, Dr Sakara said, “if we really do believe that Agriculture is a means by which we can drive this economy let us see it first in the national budget then we will see it in other areas”, adding that what Agriculture can do for this country, is ten times more than what Oil can do for the nation.

He added that, what is happening between Ghana and Burkina Faso in terms of food importation is that, we are not utilizing the various rivers that we have: Boti, White Volta ,Black Volta, Oti River that enters the sea every second which we failed to expand into irrigation facilities at the expense of these rivers, is what brought about the importation of food from Burkina Faso.
