By: Austin Ofori Addo

Mr. Shakespeare Dzokoto, an agricultural consultant has added his voice to the ever nagging issue of aquatic weeds that are affecting the activities of the fisher folks on the Volta Lake. According to Mr. Dzokoto, the troublesome weeds can only be controlled through the spraying of chemicals that is harmless to the aquatic habitats on the Volta Lake.

Shakespeare who was speaking on Rite FM‘s Agric forum with Krobea Asante asserted that those weeds are very troublesome where many countries continued to be affected including the Asias, adding that dealing with the problem is a very expensive venture.

He also explained that the aquatic weeds can be controlled by other methods where particular creatures are released into the water to feed on the weeds. This method he noted is however very slow. Another method he mentioned involves the resort to mechanical applications to clear the weeds is spite of the fact that the weeds are quite strong.

The other method which involves divers involves the use of man power but all these methods Mr. Dzokoto contends are not helpful.

He therefore suggested the use of a special technique called ‘24D’ which he argues can help fight these aquatic weeds without harming the aquatic life. He said what is worrying is that many people complain that the Volta lake serves a as source of their drinking water but the authorities have to ensure that the necessary tests are carried out to ensure the safety of the water for drinking.
