About 74,000 Farmers Share 21 Extension Officers in Lower Manya

Farmers situated in the Lower Manya Municipality have challenges like farmers in any other township. Challenges that have to do with high cost of production, availability of improved seeds, fertilizers and disease and pest outbreaks. These challenges can be effectively tackled through proper extension services.

On Rite FM’s Agriculture Development Program, Mr. Alex Fodjor, the Head of Agriculture Extension Services in Lower Manya stated that the Yilo Municipality has about 74,000 farmers and at least 21 extension officers handling them. This brings the farmer/extension officer ratio to about 3,524 farmers per extension officer. These 21 extension officers are made up of 11 NABCO extension officers and 10 full time extension officers.

Herculean isn’t it? It is nearly impossible for 1 extension officer to effectively cater for all these farmers. With 69% of the Lower Manya population involved in agriculture, there is a need to improve the availability of quality extension officers to facilitate increase in yield, hasten agriculture development and improve agriculture’s contribution to the nation’s economic development.
