Residents of Ammisahekyir, a suburb of Cape Coast in the Central Region on Thursday, were astounded when some police officers brutally assaulted a 50-year-old man, Papa Mensah, who died later.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital for autopsy.
The police, according to DAILY GUIDE’s sources, embarked on a special operation to arrest criminals at their hideout ahead of the Christmas festivities.
During the operation, the police officers arrested a number of people in the metropolis.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that Papa Mensah, who was arrested in the course of the operation, was beaten and stripped naked by the police personnel before being conveyed to the police station.
The paper gathered that most of the people in the vicinity wept because of the manner in which the police officers struck him repeatedly with the butt of their guns.
A daughter of the deceased, who had information about the incident, quickly moved to the police station with a shirt and trouser to be given to the father in cells but she was prevented from doing so.
Papa Mensah reportedly vomited blood and also defecated on himself.
The situation, according to sources, created some apprehension among the police personnel.
The deceased was later rushed to the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital where he died.
Some of the residents lambasted the police for their unprofessional conduct.
