Farmers At War With Forestry Commission Over Destruction Of Farmlands

By: Catherine Ahiador:

Some farmers in Agogo in the Ashanti Region are up in arms with the Forestry Commission and the government over the destruction of some farmlands ostensibly on lands owned by the Commission.

Mr Edward Asadu, who is the 2015 Ashanti Regional best farmer has accused the government of destroying the plantain farms of the people of Agogo. Mr. Asadu who was speaking on Rite FM’s Akuafo Sesen on the Rite Morning Ride said the action of the government which did not come with any compensation to affected farmers, was not the best as it affected the farming activities of the people.

Explaining this further, he admitted that while the land in question actually belonged to the Forestry Commission, it was left unattended to and without use by the Commission. According to him, the people took advantage of the fact that the land was not in use to cultivate hectares of plantain and other crops on it.

Mr. Asadu added that the reasons behind the actions of the Forestry Commission was as a result of the land in question being given to some South-African’s for the purposes of planting a tree. He said although they have no problem with the said land being taken by the South-Africans, they were only unhappy that no prior notice was given them which resulted in the destruction of their crops.
