Tsopoli Farmers Angry…Following Government Takeover Of Their Lands
By Catherine Ahiador:
The decision by the government to take over farmlands from some farmers around Tsopoli, a farming community near Ningo-Prampram on the Tema – Ada road in the Greater Accra region has ended up displacing a number of farmers.
That is not all, the affected farmers have also been rendered unemployed as a result of losing their lands for the purposes of the construction of an airport.
President of the Ningo-Prampram Farmers Base Network, Mr. Wisdom Ameyaw Brodo who spoke on Rite FM’s Akuafo Se Sen show on Tuesday told host Owuraku Asamoah that the action of the government has seriously affected he and his colleagues as more than 5000 acres of farmlands have been taken from them.
An angry Mr. Brodo alleged that the said land was owned by the people and therefore did not see why government would move in on them with bulldozers without any prior notice or warning. This he lamented resulted in the massive destruction to farmlands including crops that were almost ready for harvesting.
“Why must the government destroy 5000 acres of farmland when they only need 500 acres for the construction of the airport,” Mr. Brodo quizzed.
