Police, Robbers Gun Battle At Somanya – One shot dead

Police in Somanya in the Eastern region Sunday dawn gunned down one out of five armed men who attempted robbing the Somanya branch of the Manya Krobo Rural Bank Ltd. The other four managed to escape.

Confirming the incident to Rite news, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of the Somanya Police Command, ASP Ostin Oteng Adjei said his outfit received a distress call at about 2:30 in the wee hours of Sunday from a witness who suspected the activities of five young men within the premises of the bank at the ungodly hour.

The Police Commander who revealed that his men were on patrol duties at the time, immediately rushed to the scene to confront the robbers. According to him the five men upon seeing the police initiated the exchange of gunfire with the police, forcing his men to return fire resulting in the death of one of the robbers.

The deceased whose identity could not immediately be ascertained is believed to be in his mid-thirties. The mortal remains of the robber has meanwhile been deposited at the Atua government hospital pending autopsy

Items retrieved from the scene included a pair of iron cutters, crow bar, pincers, live cartridges, two pump action guns and a pistol.

ASP Ostin meanwhile told journalists that there was no security man on duty at the time police intervened.

In an interview with Mr. Edmund Ohipeni, CEO of the Manya Krobo Rural Bank on the incident, he intimated that the robbers did not succeed in making away with any monies or valuables and has assured customers that their monies were safe.

Concerned patrons of the bank and residents have meanwhile questioned how and why authorities of the bank left the Bank without any form of security.
