Peasant Farmers Reply Minister

By Nyarko Francis:
The President of peasant farmers Association of Ghana Mr. Adams has taken a swipe at the Minister of food and agriculture Mr. Fiifi Kwetey for describing farmers as people who are reluctant to and allergic to change thought the government is neck-deep and committed to supporting them.
According to him farmers in the country continue to suffer neglect at the hands of politicians and there is no single help from them in the country.
Mr. Adams who was speaking at a two day National Agricultural Policy forum organized by the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) in collaboration with SEND Ghana at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel said small holder farmers cannot have access to market to sell their harvested products adding that access to extension officers was still a challenge as well as bad roads and others are still a canker on the neck of the ordinary farmer.
The president felt bad about comments which suggested that farmers were still inclined to the old and effective means of farming such as the use of cutlasses and hoes, asking, “who has given a farmer a tractor to use before and which he rejected?”
It will be recalled that the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Fiifi Kwetey recently described farmers in the country as ungrateful people who did not want to appreciate the government’s efforts by adopting new technologies in farming. According to the minister, government was working hard in improving the level of agriculture in the country, an effort farmers were not appreciating.
