The Volta Region branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has begun a strike Wednesday to protest two years’ salary arrears and an absence of a collective agreement.
Volta Regional Secretary of the teachers’ association, Kenneth Adevu, said the teachers have decided to leave the classrooms because attempts to bring government to the negotiation table has proved futile.
NAGRAT members in Greater also issued a threat to go on strike two days ago.
Meanwhile, a full blown nationwide strike by NAGRAT is likely to happen by end of next week over similar demands.
National President of the teachers’ association, Christian Addae-Poku, told Joy News they have notified the Labour Commission of plans to embark on a strike from October 6, 2015.
“We are saying that government has recruited people and these people have been working two to three years and they have not been paid. Government must pay them,” said Addae-Poku.
NAGRAT is also demanding that the current situation where some graduate teachers have been promoted but have not been upgraded accordingly must end.
“We are also saying that vehicle maintenance allowance that is due some colleagues of ours must be paid,” the NAGRAT President said.
A nationwide strike would most likely affect academic work as Senior High Schools across the country admit students for the 2015/2016 academic year.
