An executive board member of the Ghana Federation of Labor (GFL), Albert Yamoah, says that Organized Labour will meet today [Monday] to deliberate on how to respond to government’s decision not to withdraw the Energy Sector Levy.
Government has through the Energy Sector Levy act, passed by Parliament, increased utility tariffs as well as prices of petroleum products in the country.
This has drawn massive criticism from organized labour, who hit the streets last Wednesday to register their displeasure.
In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Yamoah said that government refused to change its position because it has to work towards avoiding power outages in future.
“We were talking about complete withdrawal of Energy Sector levy but government says there is nothing they can do about it. This is because they do not want us to be visited by the dumsor issue, that they want to clear all their outstanding debts and make some savings towards the future because in the budget, the way they priced the oil is not what is happening,” he said.
Albert Yamoah also said that before the federation can respond to government, it will have to meet its members on Monday.
“They made it clear that they cannot change they cannot change their position but we feel that we need to confer with our constituents before we can respond to that. We are going to meet on Monday, decide on it and they will tell us what to say and how we should go about it on Tuesday.”
