Mavis Frimpong Ushered as Road Ambassador

The Deputy Regional Minister of the Eastern Region, Madam Mavis Frimpong, was yesterday ushered in as the road ambassador in the Eastern region by the National Road Safety Commission, NRSC at Koforidua.

The program which was under the theme “Recognizing Good Practices That Enhance Road Safety” is said to have been the 5th celebration since the UN’s decade of action plan 2011 – 2020 was launched. Many            Dignitaries and various relevant stakeholders who are involved in road safety management were present.

The Eastern Regional Minister Honourable Bosiako Sekyere , the Deputy Regional Minister, Mavis Frimpong, the eastern regional police commander, Akuriba Yaagyi, the Red Cross Society (RCS), National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Metro Mass  Transport (MMT), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), and Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority  (DVLA) were some of the dignitaries and stakeholders present.

The Eastern Regional road manager, Kwasi Yirenkyi, said Road Safety Awareness Week (RSAW) is a programmed observed in November every year. He said RSAW is a national event that seeks to combine nationwide effort to remind the entire population on critical road safety issues and to heighten awareness for the need to address those issues at policy.

The Eastern Regional police Commander Akuriba Yaagyi also added that, even though road transport is improving in the eastern region, there are still huge challenges to address. He said as at September, 17% of death statistics was recorded involving road accident hence all this comes as a result of overloading of vehicle, speeding, and drunkenness among drivers.

The Eastern Regional minister, Hon. Bosiako Sekyere further stated, for country like Ghana to improve upon its standard life of the citizens and move towards an improved road transport, there is the need for road safety measures and it various categories to be heeded to essentially  as the first phenomenon.

The Minister further cautioned drivers to take key note of road awareness measures such as road sign, road ramps, and speeding all in an effort to reduce the rampant road accidents occurring on our roads. He finally urged various authorities and relevant stakeholders to work harder in order to ensure good and secured road transport in the country.
