International day of forest to be observed

The forestry commission in collaboration with the ministry of lands and natural resources will celebrate the 4th forestry week and greening Ghana day from May 23rd to May 29th.

Mr. Andy Osei Okrau, the human resource manager of the forestry commission speaking to rite news said this event is to commemorate the international day of forest which falls on March 21st every year. But the forestry department of Ghana has decided to host and celebrate its own in the month of May.

Mr. Andy observed that celebrating the event in the month of May is appropriate, because it normally rain from the month of May to July, during which the weather becomes conducive for plantation and growth of trees.

Mr. Okran revealed that, the event is going to take place for a week and with the theme “healthy forest mitigate climate change”. He then added that, a day has been set aside by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of forest and tress outside the forest and surrounding areas.

He continue by saying, it is very significant to maintain and protect our forest because sustainability of our lives and other living organism depends on our forest and can also serves as a medicinal purposes for human existences.

Mr. Okran reveal that the activities will start on 23rd May, where international Quiz’s competition will be organised at the various auditorium of the forestry commission. Selected schools to be participate are Ghanata Senior High School at Dodowa, Achimota School, and Amasaman senior high school.

He said this is to create awareness and groom the youth about the essence of protecting the forest and address the problem of climate change.
