Gov’t should set up an institute to research into mango production

The 2009 National Best Farmer, Mr. Davis Narh Korboe has argued strongly that it is the responsibility of the government to set up a Mango Research Institute and this is the time, to help solve the problems mango farmers are facing in the country .

Speaking on the Rite Fm’s Morning Ride, Mr. Davis explained that, pollinators such as bees and other insert that help pollinate the flowers are not seen on their farms, adding that the few flowers are also dropping from the trees.

He also complained that the selection and the use of chemicals is beyond the knowledge of the farmers, which needs the help of the research institute.

According to him, mango farming is improving and many farmers are showing interest in it, but the challenges are numerous therefore government needs to support the farmers with a research institute.

He said, countries like South Africa and Brazil have a solid research institute and even a school where farmers go whenever they have challenges on their farms.

He noted that, millions of cedis from mango export goes into the coffers of Government because farmers export thousands of tones into the European Market  which is earning foreign exchange to the country and boosting the economy, adding that, government should support the sector with a research institute so that production will increase and more money flow into the country.
