Government Neglecting Orange Farming
By Austin Ofori
Orange sellers are gradually losing their jobs due to the poor purchase of the commodity in the country. Mr. Mamoud Ayuguba, president of the Aflao Orange Sellers Association expressed this sentiment on the Akuafo Se Sen segment of the Morning Rite Morning Ride on Tuesday.
Though Mr. Ayuguba was of the view that climate change was equally a problem, he said the poor sale of the products was an even worse scenario for them. He was largely of the view that the massive shift of focus towards the production of oranges in neighbouring Togo and Benin which hitherto were not cultivating the fruits largely contributed to the competition which results in poor sales.
He blamed the government which he said only focused on the cocoa sector to the neglect and detriment of other relevant agricultural sectors such as orange cultivation.
Mr Mamud further appealed to the government to support them like they do the cocoa farmers because orange production can also boost the economy of the country.
He advised the government to open factories to process the oranges which can also create employment for the youth.
