President John Dramani Mahama has indicated government’s readiness to develop the agricultural potentials especially in the middle and northern sectors of the Volta Region. He said under the programme, free cocoa seedlings would be distributed with substantial agricultural extension services to ensure that farmers adhere to right farming practices.
President Mahama who was addressing the chiefs and people of the Hohoe Municipality as part of his three-day “accounting to the people” tour of the Volta Region, said yam farmers would be given sufficient funds to increase yam production in the area.
He said government would also give support to develop the bamboo industry for both domestic and international consumption.
The President said the Municipality and Kadjebi and Jasikan assemblies, are abound in bamboo plantations and the development of the industry would increase the supply of raw materials to the furniture and general carpentry industry.
President Mahama appealed to traditional authorities to willingly release lands for the development of the potentials in order to create employment for numerous unemployed youth in the area and beyond.
On roads, President Mahama said 10 kilometres of the municipal roads, would be asphalted, whilst other roads in the surrounding communities would be tarred to make them motorable at all times.
He said the Hohoe-Kadjebi- Jasikan portions of the eastern corridor roads would be asphalted to add up to the already completed 46-kilometre stretch of the Dodo-Pepesu-Nkwanta side.
President Mahama commended the chiefs and people for their peaceful co-existence after altercations that erupted between the natives and the Muslim community few years ago and called on them to continue to advise the youth against the recurrence of such conflicts.
Talking about continuity, President Mahama said he had done a lot to merit a second term in this year’s General election.
He said Presidents John Jerry Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor were given two terms each and it was only fair that he also received his second term to complete the development projects he had embarked on.
Nana Afrifa Akuamoah, Paramount Chief Akpafu, on behalf the chiefs and people of the area, commended government for the development projects they had received over the years.
He mentioned the establishment of the Ho University of Allied Sciences indicating that the proximity would encourage more students to enroll in the university in the coming years.
Nana Dwamena appealed to President Mahama to continue to give the people their share of the national cake to experience his development agenda.
