Cassava has the potential to save the economy- Prof Frimpong Boateng

Ghana Cassava Centre of Excellence-GACCE yesterday launched the first ever National Cassava week Celebration at Accra in aid of promoting the cultivation, processing and marketing of cassava in Ghana and beyond.

The celebration will take off from 13th to 18th September in Accra.

In view this, the planning committee for the celebration was inaugurated and a new website for Ghana cassava centre of excellence was officially lunched.

Speaking at the lunch, the Executive Director of Ghana Cassava Centre of Excellence, Mr. William Agyei said the cassava week celebration was designed to create the platform that will bring all the various actors in the industry together to make solid decisions to improve the cassava value chain.

He noted in 2011, Ghana produced over 14 million metric tons of cassava with 2015 recording a significant rise at  15 million metric tons , however only less than twenty percent of this output is processed or consumed annually and this calls for serious concern and national action plan for the utilization  and marketing of cassava.

Speaking to the press after the lunch, the formal CEO at Korla bu teaching hospital at the cardiotharacic centre, Professor Frimpong Boateng said cassava has more potential to improve our economy when marketed well, and can provide jobs to cover a lot of unemployed youth because of it diverse usage.

In attendance were, Former CEO of Cardiothoracic Center at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Proffessor Frimpong Boateng, Executive Director of Ghana Cassava Centre of Excellence,Mr. William Agyei,  , Director of manufacture at the ministry of trade and Industry, Mr.Kofi Nuhu, National Programme Cordinator of GASIP Mr. Roy Ayariga .
