Betty Mould must apologise to Ashantis – Group

A group calling itself Ashanti Youth Association (AYA) is calling on a Vice Chairperson of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to immediately apologise for her alleged claim that she sometimes regrets being an Ashanti.

Betty Mould-Iddrisu addressing party supporters in the Ashanti region lamented what she describes as the skewed manner in which the media in the Ashanti region reports the achievements of the NDC government.

In her view, Ghana in the last seven years under the NDC administration has seen an unprecedented achievement in education and educational infrastructure and therefore finds it shocking that the press in the region is not “objective” in their reportage on the performance of the Mills and Mahama administrations.

Sometimes when I listen to the radio and I hear the things that are said on the radio, I feel pained, I feel pained that I am an Ashanti. I wonder why we can’t value what we have. I wonder why we can’t acknowledge that in Africa, Ghana is number one and among the top five countries,” she stressed.

But the Operations Director for AYA on Adom FM’s morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem’ on Tuesday said they are disappointed in the comments of the former Attorney General.

“How can a former minister of state act in such an uncultured manner by calling the bluff of Ashantis? We are trying to restrain ourselves in order not to jump into the gutters with her. We cannot imagine how “a butterfly can call itself a bird”.

“We the youth of Asante over the years have supported any son or daughter of the Asante land regardless of his/her political affiliation; we have always put Asante first,” he asserted.

He said the association has given the former Attorney General one week to apologise to the people of Ashanti or face their wrath.

However, aide to Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu, Onasis Kobby on the same show rubbished the claim, stating that her comment has been taken out of context.

“I have the video recording of what she said and I must say that her comment was not what people think.

“She didn’t say that to undermine Ashantis but rather said it in a very different way and so I’m surprised that people should take it to a different level,” he lamented.
