Aquatic Weeds Having Positive Effects

A Research Officer at the Environmental Protection Agency EPA, Mr. Carl Fiati has divulged numerous benefits that can be derived from the aquatic weeds on the Kpong River and its surroundings. Aquatic weeds on the Kpong River have been a major challenge and threat to the river but the weeds can be transformed to valuable products, he said this on Friday April 1st, 2016 during an interview with Rite 90.1 FM.

According to him, there has been training programs concerning the generation of the aquatic weeds into meaningful value around Lower Volta and Asuogyaman area in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He further explained that, the weeds can be converted into organic fertilizer, biogas, plants composting, and the other benefits.

Mr. Fiati however added that, in Kenya, the water hyson weed is used for furniture, fibre for artifact etc. A statement issued by him indicated that the EPA has even formed a committee for the water weeds and trained the residence around the affected area on how to use the weeds as a resource to generate something valuable by harvesting the weeds for composting.

He confirmed that, they have provided the suitable machines for the harvesting of the weeds and also urged the Assemblies to assist in fund mobilization and give them license to operate on safety harvesting of the weeds. Mr. Fiati again deplored the use of chemical to eradicate the weeds hence; it will have negative impact on the water.
