Aquaculture Is An Expensive Venture

Farmers of aquaculture have voiced out their challenges and frustrations to the government. Mr. Nene Aner Ngua, chairman of the Quality Aquaculture Society at Natriku near Akuse in the Lower Manya Krobo district said on Rite FM’s Feed the Future platform Tuesday morning that Aquaculture farming was capital intensive and that farmers also needed feeds and fingerlings.

Mr. Nene Aner Ngua emphasized that good hygienic practices demanded the frequent change of the water harbouring the fish and this cost the poor farmers a lot to do. He said this compelled all concerned fish farmers to come to the agreement to resort to cage fishing which does not come cheaper anyway, compelling him to seek assistance from the government.

He said cage fishing was good and a more dependable and cheaper form of fish farming compared to the pond method. Apart from this, he also indicated that their ponds were exposed to unscrupulous people fishing from their ponds, adding that they needed security to safeguard their fishes in the ponds.

He said all efforts to get some assistance from the district assembly have proven futile so far and they are now looking towards the Ministry of Food and Agric for assistance.
