Yilo Krobo Assembly Cuts Sod For Construction of An Ultra-modern Abattoir

Construction of a new and convenient place for slaughtering and processing of animals and meat respectively has begun in Social Welfare, a suburb of Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.

At a sod-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area Hon. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor told butchers and members of the Zongo community the GHS378, 857 was coming to replace the unhygienic slaughterhouse.

According to a sketched plan cited by Rite FM, the Ultra-modern facility when completed will come with a venue where animals will be slaughtered (Slaughterhouse), a pen to keep live animals before slaughtering, an oven for burning and a utility yard to serve as a meat shop. Other attached auxiliary facilities include a store, office for the chief butcher, washrooms and walkway.

The Veterinary Service Department (VSD) from the Ministry of Agriculture had on Friday, 30 August, 2019 shut down the Somanya slaughterhouse which supplies beef to thousands of consumers following unsanitary conditions under which it operated.

The Veterinary Services said that operations at the slaughterhouse has suspended indefinitely until insanitary conditions under which it operated are addressed through a corrective plan.

Despite this and many other frustrations, Chief Butcher, Alhaji Sani commended the government as well as Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly for cutting sod for the project finally.

Queen mother for the area, Manye Dede I called on the contractor to fall her since the community was ready to support communal labor.
Mr. Adam Bawa, the Managing Director of Commia Company Limited, the firm responsible for the construction of the abattoir assured that a maximum of three months will be used to complete the project since every material needed was readily available.

However, Rite FM, check from the Engineering Department of the Assembly indicates that six months is the agreed duration for the completion of the project.

On his part, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidates for Yilo Krobo constituency for the 2020 elections, Mr. Francis Djetse Apertey appealed to the gathering to renew the governing mandate of H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo by voting massively for the president and him (Mr. Apertey).

He also noted that the NPP government has the development of Yilo Krobo at heart, and more was going to be delivered if the mandate of the party is renewed.

Source says the contract for construction of the abattoir was signed in 2014 with limited funds from the District Development Fund (DDF) currently referred to as District Performance Assessment Tool (D-PAT).

Hon Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor in 2018, told the host of Community Watch, one of the Rite FM social development advocacy programs, limited D-PAT inflow to the Assembly was the cause of delay for bringing the contractor on site.
