Award Winners Disagree With Decline In Agriculture Production

By Nyarko Francis

Past winners of the National Farmers’ Day awards have sharply disagreed with a statement by the Finance minister, that Agriculture production in the country has declined by 0.04% percent.

Speaking on the Rite FM morning Ride on Thursday with Owuraku Asamoah, the chairman for National Farmers Award Winners Association of Ghana (NFTAWAG), Mr. Davis Narh Korboe totally disagreed with that assertion, rather stating that contrary to the assertion, there have been massive improvements in the sector especially in rice production.

According to Mr. Korboe, farm production was increasing even more than expected. He said mechanized farming has also gone up and wondered where the finance Ministry got their figures. He explained that factors that are contributing to the declining of the Agricultural sector happen to be poor financing of the sector.

He equally cited the position of Government on focusing more on cocoa to the neglect of other sectors, adding that cocoa alone cannot develop the economy.

He said the youth are not being attracted into the Agriculture sector because there are no convincing policies to entice them.
