Construction of Conducive Abattoirs a Responsibility of MMDAs – Veterinary Officer Asserts

Veterinary Officer for Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region is placing the responsibility of the construction of conducive abattoirs at the doorsteps of the district and municipal assemblies.

Mr. Patrick Sodokeh says the responsibility of building hygienic abattoirs in the various districts for the slaughtering of animals for consumption is a legitimate duty of the district and municipal assemblies.

The Veterinary officer disclosed this in an interview with sit-in host of the Rite Morning Ride, Eric Boafo on Wednesday during the ‘Akuafo Sesen’ segment of the show.

He maintains that though it behoves on the assemblies to put up such structures, the responsibility still falls on the veterinary officer to ensure the wholesomeness and healthiness of slaughtered animals.

Mr. Patrick Sodokeh explained that this is critical for public health which also contributes to socio economic developments.

The Veterinary Officer in responding to the regrettable and insanitary and unhygienic state of the Akuse abbatoir in the Eastern region says the situation had compelled the butchers to move their activities to the Akuse Zongo Mosque which is not the best and inappropriate environment for purposes of animal slaughtering.

Even worse, butchers still resort to the burning of car tires to singe animal carcasses, a practice Mr. Sodokeh condemns as unwholesome.

He reiterated that the slaughtering of animals must be supervised by a veterinary officer who will ensure that thorough examination is conducted on the animal to determine its safety or otherwise for human consumption, especially as a result of the prevalence of various animal diseases such as tuberculosis with the likelihood to infect humans.
