By: Saddath Asiamah

Ghanaians have been struggling with abject poverty, human trafficking, money laundering, robbery, corruption, frequent power outages popularly known as ‘dumsor’ which has adversely affected many businesses and industries.

The NDC Mahama led administration in its quest to restore power to Ghanaians, led the purchase of the Ameri power plant at a cost of $510m which has stirred a lot of debate after a Norwegian newspaper released a publication that Mr. Farouk, chief executive officer of Ameri power plant was an internationally wanted criminal.

Leading politicians in the minority have alleged and accused the government, saying that the Ameri power plant could have been purchased at a cost of only $220m. However it was bought at the detriment and expense of the tax payer for $510m.

In an interview with Member of Parliament for Nkuranza north, honorable major Derrick Oduro lamented that if the nation entered into agreement with a wanted criminal because we were ignorant, nothing stops us from pursuing to ascertain whether or not the correct amount was paid for the Ameri plant.

He further stated that, the stated amount of $510m was too high and has therefore called for an independent commission of enquiry to probe into the matter so that doubting Thomas’s in the country can have a clear price of the Ameri plant. According to him, hiring Ameri plant for five years before it is fully taken over is absolutely not meaningful and that, the nation could have bought and owned the plant.
