The Sales Consultant and Territory Manager for the Southern Sector of Dizengoff Ghana Ltd, Mr. Francis Kingsford Krah has advised smallholder farmers to take farming as a ‘serious business.’
Mr. Francis Kingsford Krah says farmers were better off taking farming as business and not as a hobby to enhance their profits.
“Small holder farmers must take farming as a serious business and not as a hobby so that they can really enjoy the benefits of farming compared to what large commercial farmers are doing,” he said in an interview with Morning Show host, Captain Adabugar during the Rite Morning Ride.
He was speaking ahead of Rite FM’s 3rd Agric Forum slated for the Ensign College of Public Health on Friday August 17th, 2018.
The event will bring together hundreds of farmers and various stakeholders.
Themed on ‘The Role of Technology in Improving Agricultural Productivity and Livelihoods,’ the program aims at producing a conducive environment for stakeholders and farmers to interact, share ideas and chart a way forward for the agric sector.
Mr. Krah while noting that smallholder farmers stood to enjoy the benefits of farming as large commercial farmers are doing, however said this can only be realized if they committed themselves to the farming business instead of the hobby-like approach to the activity mostly pursued by farmers.
Mechanized farming
The Dizengoff Official who further urged farmers to embrace new farming methods in mechanized farming said farmers could expand their farms if they engaged in mechanized farming.
“Farmers should engage in mechanized farming by engaging tractor services to expand their farms,” he said.
Regular monitoring of farms by farmers, the Sales Consultant and Territory Manager averred, could also help farmers to ensure the timely detection of diseases as well as ensuring good relationship with farmers.
“Our farmers must visit their farms regularly to ensure the early detection of diseases and also help them build good relationships with extension officers to educate them on agronomic practices,” he urged.
To Mr. Francis Kingsford Krah, land preparation is another key requirement in farming since it determines the yields at harvest.
He has therefore advised smallholder farmers to form Farmer-Base Organizations to engage in cooperative farming to pave way for easy accessibility of credit facilities from financial institutions and other inputs to boost their business as large commercial farmers are doing.
