Odumase Krobo Police Take Steps to Limit Rampant Students Misbehavior, Assault on Teachers

The Odumase Police Command of the Ghana Police Service in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal is rolling out a school visit and sensitization program to educate pupils on their basic legal rights and responsibilities as children.

The exercise is expected to reform the recent deviant behavior and limit the rampant attack on teachers in the area.

In recent times, students’ attacks on teachers in schools in Lower Manya Krobo municipality have been of serious concern in the media and the general public.

An eighteen-year Kodjonya townfolk has been sentenced to three years by Odumase Circuit Court for threatening to kill a teacher on duty at Kodjionya Millennium Presby Junior High School, after he was found guilty on Friday, 13 August, 2021.

In June, 2021, a final year Visual Art student of Akro Technical Senior High School was reported to have stabbed a security officer on duty for no cause.

At a sensitization durbar with the pupils of Akro Junior High school at Odumase on Wednesday morning, the Police Commander, Superintendent, Doris Grant says their action was as a result of the frequent cases involving children that have come to their attention.

“From the onset, we recorded some cases involving children and we thought that we had to reach out to the children for them to know the issue of crime; so that they don’t get into crime,” Supt Doris told Rite FM’s Kodwo Boafo

Having introduced the pupils to the position of the law in respect of rape, defilement, drug abuse, incest and causing harm, a study guide and career counseling were also delivered.

“We also spoke to them about how to learn for their own good and better future because we realized that some of them are involved in sexual issues,” said the District Commander of Police for Odumase Command, Supt. Doris Grant.

Sargent Abena Owusua of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) speaking to the students, averred that perpetrators of these crimes could be their relatives including parents, teachers, pastors, friends and classmates.

She further indicated that many of similar cases are been investigated and prosecuted at the courts within the Krobo vicinity and thus cautioned students to look to themselves well to stay safe from falling prey to sexual abuse.

The homes and parenting, the security officer Doris Grant noted are key and vital to the success of the exercise. As a result, the police command has extended the education and sensitization to religious leaders and parents.

“We are also involving the churches and parents in the communities and let them know their responsibilities as the law says. We already have two programs with Atua Presbyterian church,” she said.

To sustain the program, the police administration in the area is calling all and sundry including philanthropists to support the initiative with teaching learning materials to be donated to students. It has also appealed in similar regard for funds.

On his part, the headteacher of Akro Junior High School, Mr. Eric Demah Nartey who commended the initiative by the police, says the education was going to help both teachers and pupils for a safe teaching and learning environment and as well transform the character of students in the Krobo enclave.

Adding; Mr. Eric Demah asked parents, teachers and the general public to cooperate with the police for effective policing and security.

Accompanying the District Commander were, Sargent Beatrice Anyidoho, Sargent Abena Owusua, Corporal Bernice Omare Yeboah and Chief Inspector Margaret Auther.

Scheduled for Wednesdays between the hours of 8:00 am and 9:30 am, junior high schools in Agormanya including Method, Islamic, Roman Catholic (RC) and Piengua Yokwenor will have their turn come September, 2021.

The rest are Yokuyim MA, Ayimersu MA and the private schools in the Odumase Circuit B of the Ghana Education Service.
