Survivors of Asitey accident speak

Some survivors of the Asitey accident on Saturday night have disclosed that the bus developed mechanical faults several times in the course of the journey before the fatal crash that killed seven occupants and left several others injured.

The injured who spoke from their admission beds at the Atua government hospital said even though the Daewoo saloon bus with registration number GV 2497 14 stopped many times on the way to fix a recurring mechanical fault, the driver kept assuring them that he could manage the situation.

Unfortunately, the vehicle plunged into a ditch at the Asitey curve, leading to several casualties.

Meanwhile, 37-year-old mother of the five month old baby who survived the accident unscathed, Joana Amewugah said her baby’s escape is an act of miracle.

The infant was the only occupant aboard the ill-fated trip that survived the accident without a scratch.

The Daewoo saloon bus belonging to the Volta River Authority with 61 parishioners of the Saint Barbara Catholic church in Akosombo on board was returning to Akosombo from Akim Oda where they had attended a funeral

The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Atua Government Hospital, the St Martin De Porres Hospital, the VRA hospital and the Eastern region hospital.

The enclave which is riddled with several sharp curves has recorded several accidents over the years as many continue to perish.
