Farmers To Loose Economically Due to African Swine Fever – Isaac Nyumu Teye.
The Lower Manya Krobo Veterinary Officer, Mr. Isaac Nyumu Teye has stated that, the African swine fever will have no effect on humans but will cause economical loss to the farmer.
The result to determine whether the disease is an African swine fever will be found out on Monday, he said.
This shouldn’t raise any alarm, because, the authorities and veterinary officers are doing all they can to educate the farmers on what to do.
Meanwhile, most of the farmers don’t give out the accurate number of death cases recorded to these officers leading to the difficulties in compiling the records.
However, Yilo is doing its own compilation whilst, Manya is also doing theirs separately. Mr. Nyumu Teye made it known that; floods can be one of the causes of swine fever, adding that the sources of drinking water for the pigs also need to be considered.
Swine fever is a viral disease that has been identified in Africa, yet the control measures have not been effective enough over the years.
However, the authorities are working hard to eradicate this disease with the “Rearing for Food and Job” policy is in section.
To enable the control of this disease, veterinary officers will check any pig ready to be transported for slaughter. The Lower Manya Krobo Extension Officer, Mr. Alex Fordjour, made his submissions saying, the swine fever is also being spread by the buyers and this happens when they buy pigs with such disease from different farms to mix them up.
He continued that, some farmers refuse to report swine cases to veterinary officers thereby burying infected dead pigs their own wrong ways, also leading to the spread of the disease.
