Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has been named as Chairman of the African Union at the 24th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Mugabe takes over from Mauritania’s Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.
The 90-year-old will be the oldest leader to assume the chairmanship of the Union.
The Zimbabwean leader, who will turn 91 on February 21, has been a staunch critic of western leaders, who have also criticized his style of leadership.
Mugabe has one year to serve in his new position.
