Catholic Priest Demonstrates Uncommon Leadership Trait As He Cleans Gutters To Create Sanitation Awareness
Rev Father Bright Kennedy Agyepong, under whose tutelage Bright Inspirations operates, organized his first-ever clean-up exercise campaign in Somanya DC road and it environs as part of efforts to create awareness on issues concerning cleanliness and hygiene.
Rev. Knenedy Bright, who is the Priest in charge of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, mobilized enthusiastic youth to clear weeds, desilted choked gutters and removed heaped rubbish around St Peter’s Parish, which was the starting point through to the streets of Somanya DC road.
Father Brightnoted that, poor sanitation cost the country $290 million annually.
According to him, the amount, which is equivalent to $12 per person per year, translates to 1.6 per cent of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
He also noted that the sanitation service delivery in the cities has not witnessed significant improvement in recent times.
Change of attitude and behavior, are important contributing factors to improve the sanitary conditions in the cities and major towns.
The Father Kennedy Agyapong disclosed that, his outfit has decided to engage in a lot of clean up exercise to improve the sanitation situation in Yilo Krobo and Ghana as a whole.
Urging appropriate authorities including the sanitation ministry and the traditional leadership to facilitate the deployment of Sanitation Guards to help in the enforcement of the sanitation laws in the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies.
“Consequently, Bright Inspiration has decided to lead the call to ensure sanitation across the country but the Sanitation Ministry must facilitate the deployment of Sanitation Guards popularly known as ‘saman-saman’ to strengthen the enforcement of the sanitation bye-laws, to maintain cleanliness in our cities and towns” he remarked.
In an effort to ensure strict adherence to the various national and local environmental sanitation laws and regulations in Ghana, the Ministry must hasting the process of putting together a comprehensive consolidated National Sanitation laws.
This, the Catholic Priest says will serve as the primary reference document for the preparation of local bye-laws as well as enhancing successful prosecution of sanitation offenders.
Speaking to Rite News, the founder of Bright Inspirations explains that “the rationale is to rebirth the communal labor attitude into Ghanaians, bring back the national sanitation day that would ultimately lead to protecting our environment.”
“A clean environment is a key to survival”, he added.
The exercise is scheduled to take off every month.
