The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly has commissioned and handed over a newly built modern health facility to the Ghana Health Services (GHS) and the people of Ahinkwa in the southern part of the municipality.
The facility which came with a two-bedroom accommodation, kitchen and washroom for staff, also has main health delivery attachments, including labor room, child health clinic, outpatients department, dispensary, store and reproductive and family planning unit.
Addressing the chiefs, opinion leaders and the people, the Municipal Chief Executive – Hon Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor who acknowledged his immediate predecessor, Hon Andrews Soda for starting the project in 2015, promised the gathering he was going to add poly tank to the edifice for regular water supply.
Adding; he asked the community to live in peace and harmony with one another since it would foster development for the area.
Speaking to Rite FM after the short ceremony on Friday, Mrs. Rebecca Onyame, the Deputy Director for health for the Yilo Krobo Directorate appealed to stakeholders and philanthropists to support the facility with start-up logistics though the directorate is pursuing its headquarters for their needs.
She also revealed that the new facility was going to improve access to health care since community members, especially women want their health issues in privacy.
With the commitment to serve, the health staff of the Ahinkwa post, who has been working from the unfavorable conditions, according to them, said the handing over of the new facility was great news to them. This was because they have been working in fear and panic especially when they were called to attend to patients in the night.
Accord to the in-charge, Jannet Ackah, the directorate should expedite action to provide the needed logistics to enable start work in the soonest time. She also appealed for more staff for effective health care delivery.
Her Community Health nursing colleague, Lydia Adu also added more, saying; “we grateful to the Lord for opening this facility for us, because with this facility our hustle will reduce especially calling on us in the night say 12 am or 1 am to provide service.” At times fear and panic surround us because we could not tell if the people were going to kill us. It will improve services.”
The team leader for Japanese Organization International Cooperation Family Planning (JOICF), an NGO which is currently running a health project dubbed safe motherhood – Mrs. Patricia Kudjo who came to grace the ceremony told Rite FM, JOICF would soon be training on-the-counter drug sellers to advance their knowledge regarding teenager pregnancy, abortion and maternal health issues.
According to her the project which is targeted at five areas including, improvement in antenatal attendance, supervise delivery, postnatal care, reproductive health and general family planning is supporting the Ghana Health Services to achieve their indicators.
She noted that as part of the project, health officials within the project districts will be offered refresher training to equip them to improve on their services.
Community Health volunteers from the Ahinkwa community on the project were outdoor to the gathering.
The JOICFP safe the motherhood project is under implementation in three districts; Lower and Upper Krobo and Yilo Krobo Municipal Assemblies.
Rural communities in Ghana are challenged with either poor health infrastructure or the availability of quality health personal.
