Town Folk Chases Teacher With Machete, School Shutdown

A seventeen year old male school dropout, (name withheld) has threatened to cause harm to a national service personel, teaching at the Kodjonya Millennium Presbyterian Junior High School in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region on Wednesday.

Mr. Nanor Narh Richid, 31, who run away for his life has reported the happening to the police in Korletsom.

The accused and his sibling, 14, who is a third-year student of the school were arrested by the Odumase District Police Head Quarters for the threat of harm.

The Police Commander for the area, Superintendent Doris Hukporti confirmed the incident to Rite FM’s Omanba Kodwo Boafo in the late afternoon of Thursday saying, “we will hold on with his name and age for now, but he was arrested for threat of harm.”

The accused having stated two different ages, twenty and seventeen; Superintendent Doris noted that the accused will be prosecuted for court should their investigations proved the former age. 

The incident causing fear and panic among teachers and students, the school is currently closed down to enable authorities to restore calm, said the Circuit Supervisor for schools in Kodjonya and its environs (Odumase Circuit A), Mr. Ezekiel Sottie.

Rite FM is learning the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), the School Management Committee (SMC), chiefs and opinion leaders in the community are having an emergency meeting Friday, 13 August, 2021 at 9:00 am to address the situation, and ensure teachers and students return to school soonest.

 Meanwhile, sources close to the Lower Manya Krobo Education Directorate say the school will resume Monday, 16 August, 2021.

Even though the effort to speak to Mr. Nanor Narh Richid, the teacher who was threatened yielded no result, the accused said his action was as a result of a provocative comment made by the teacher.

According to the accused, “the teacher told me if I smoke weed, he does better than I can.”

Accused Side of The Story

The senior sibling among 5 (accused) in his words, went to Kodjonya Millennium Presbyterian JHS Wednesday afternoon to make twenty cedis (GHC 20) payment, being part payment of what he described as school fee for his 14 years junior brother who is currently in the final year at school.

Being a former student who dropped out in 2019 in the final year, some then junior students upon seeing him informed the teacher he is a brother to the 14 year boy who was part of the class on Wednesday.

Without permission, the accused had gone to sit beside his brother, an act which did not go well with the teacher.

“…the teacher asked me why I entered the classroom, and I told him because he reported to me at the entrance of the school that my brother is not serious in class and that I should advise him.”

According to him, “the teacher asked me to leave but I insisted I was here to monitor my brother. The teacher went to report to the headteacher, and my brother and I were invited. He was struggling to beat me, but the most annoying was when he told me if I smoke weed, he smokes better.”

The accused who pleaded guilty during an interview with Rite FM at the police station, said “I went and returned with a cutlass after we were separated.”

Students in public schools in Lower Many Krobo, including Akro Technical Senior High School and Matse Israel Junior school, were in the news for similar action, in which the culprit from the former was prosecuted and fined at the Odumase District Court.
