FDA reeling under Inadequate logistics, funds – PRO expresses regret

Lack of logistics to effectively carry out the mandates of the Food and Drugs Authority is affecting the work of the authority, the Head of Communication and Public Education at the Food and Drugs Authority, has lamented.

The FDA says the board is struggling to access funds and other logistics from central government in order to efficiently discharge the responsibilities of the body.

Mr. James Lartey, Head of Communication and Public Education at the FDA told host Omanba Kwadwo Boafo on the Food Safety, Nutrition and Hygiene segment of the Rite Morning Ride although the FDA is ready to carry out its functions, the lack of funds may stall efforts to effectively discharge this responsibility.

According to Mr. James Lartey, the central government does not capture the FDA in its budgeting as government only prioritizes the payment of staff salaries and other emoluments.

Mr. Lartey in regretting the inability of government to augment funds raised by the FDA said, “The FDA runs mainly on its Internally Generated Funds (IGF) to carry out its administrative expenses, stationeries, allowances, utilities, transportation costs and also manage to send at least fifty (50) personnel to the field every day to carry out its regulations.”

Besides, the PRO noted that the Food and Drugs Authority wanted to establish district offices across the country to enhance effective and efficient delivery, a strategy is hasn’t been able to undertake due largely to challenges and limited funds and the lack of logistics.
