Mrs Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Municipal Chief Executive of La Dadekotopon Municipal Area, has urged architects and developers of buildings to leave room for backyard gardens towards achieving food security.
She said if Ghanaians developed the habit of growing food crops in their homes it would enhance the growth of the agricultural sector.
Mrs Sowah was speaking at the closing ceremony of a four-day workshop, organised by AfricaLeads Ghana, a United States Assistance for International Development (USAID) programme, to train and improve the institutional capacities and the leadership skills of participants.
The workshop was attended by Assembly members, presiding members and heads of departments of the La Dadekotopon Municipal Area (LADMA).
The aim was to mobilise and inspire innovative leaders, champions and thinkers, who were committed to developing creative approaches to achieve food security.
Mrs Sowah said the growth of Agriculture would boost the national economy, and urged the participants to institute leadership roles in the sector the youth could emulate.
“Grow whatever leadership skills you have to impact society for the needed development,” she said, and congratulated the organisers for their initiative to boost food security.
Mr Godwin Ogah Awudi, the Lead Facilitator of the Programme, said the Assemblies already had well laid-out plans but how to implement them was the challenge, therefore, the training would cushion them with the right skills to be able to deliver.
Mr Awudi said the Champions of Change workshop was a unique agro-centred leadership programme that formed a key component of the AfricaLead initiative.
Under the initiatives, participants are taught effective ways to lead in developing, advocating, and managing the positive changes needed in Agriculture for food security.
Participants are also trained in leadership skills, how to engage in agro-business, and empowering women to venture into the sector to improve food security, fight hunger and poverty in the economy.
Ms Clara Denizard, the Regional Director of West Africa AfricaLead, congratulated the participants for completing the training successfully.
She said food could give people the needed nutrition, irrespective of their status in society and, therefore, encouraged them to be productive.
