Agric Consultant Cautious Of A Possible Food Shortage

By Austin Ofori:

An agricultural consultant Mr. Shakespeare Djokoto has stated categorically that the past year, 2015 did not go down well at all as far as farming is concerned in Ghana which could result in a serious famine this year in the country. He passed this comment on the Rite Morning Ride on Thursday.

Buttressing his point further, Mr. Djokoto explained that the country was heading towards a famine in the coming year as a result of the difficulties of the past year. He said food would be a scarce commodity where those who have it could be compared to a ‘cocaine dealer.’ He said a staple food such as cassava would be very expensive at such a time since it is a valuable crop.

Citing another example to make his point, Shakespeare compared the current price of maize which is Gh c 5.00 to earlier on last year when th same quantity sold for Gh c 2.00. This according to him was a threat to Ghana since according to him, a crop like maize only need a small amount of rain to do well.

Though he predicts famine in the country if current situations continue, he admitted that the situation won’t be as severe as what happened thirty-two years ago, precisely in the 1983 season.

He urged and advised farmers to ensure the safe keeping of their hard-earned crops to outbreaks of fire destroying them. He also advised them to harvest their crops on time while urging the government to look for the necessary funding to help farmers produce more rice and maize.
