The general secretary of seed production in Ghana, Mr. Thomas W. Havor has advised farmers to grow crops like vegetables and maize that have short duration advising, that the climate change has really affected rainfall pattern so the farmers should change their style of farming to suit the climate change.
In an interview with Rite news, Mr. Thomas stated that this year’s rainfall pattern has failed the farmers and accordingly advised them to shift their attention to crops that can withstand the drought.
He said research showed that farmers do not plan adequately before growing their crops and this always caused them several problems which they (farmers) can get solutions to. He mentioned poor harvest and long time of harvest which leave farmers impoverished as some of the problems resulting from this situation.
He also advised farmers to consider the type of soil they are farming on and also the life span of the crops they intended planting.
He added that government should help by rehabilitating the various irrigational dams and if possible construct new ones to support the farmers in watering their crops. He further continued that it was about time the farmers came together to ensure that they maintain the already existing dams, adding that they need not to wait for the government to come to their aid but they should try their possible best to help themselves.
